Daniel M. Cain

In Memoriam

Dan was an original.  A pioneering healthcare investment banker and private equity investor, Dan and our friend and partner Jim Cain founded our firm in 1982. Dan and Jim had a vision that made Cain Brothers what it is today. Countless colleagues and clients gained so much from him.  Dan was a mentor and friend for many young professionals at Cain Brothers, Health Enterprise Partners, and every organization he was involved with.  He inspired us with his encouragement, trust and confidence.  For Dan, there were no roadblocks, and anything was achievable – just because something had never been done before wasn’t an obstacle, but an opportunity.  He would enter a room with his customary greeting, “Hello sports fans!” and then fill the room with creativity and intelligence.

Dan leaves a wonderful legacy, one which we work every day to uphold, continue and make thrive.  A generous benefactor and trustee to Williston Northampton School, Columbia Business School, Salisbury School, the Norman Rockwell Museum, and the Shaker Hancock Village, Dan also served on many corporate boards. At Columbia Business School, Dan was the visionary and driving force behind the creation of the Cain Brothers & Company Professorship of Healthcare Management. Dan was revered for his exuberance, passion, optimism and laughter. We celebrate his life and are so grateful to him.
